Visit the Building Blocks of the Universe

One of the Events taking place at LAcon V that’s been getting really excited reactions is a live virtual tour of the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland.

ATLAS records particle collisions from CERN’s Large Hadron Collider – a 27km particle accelerator that brings particles to 99.999% the speed of light before smashing them together inside ATLAS.

The tour will be live-streamed to the convention and to our Virtual Members and will be followed by a live Q&A with the scientists exploring the universe’s fundamental particles and building blocks.  As the largest physics experiment in the world, ATLAS measures 46 meters long and 25 meters in diameter.  It is housed in a dedicated cavern 100 meters beneath the Swiss countryside.

ATLAS, together with its sister experiment CMS, discovered the Higgs boson in 2012.  Responsible for giving particles mass, the Higgs boson had been a scientific “white whale” for over 60 years, and its historic discovery led directly to the Nobel Prize in Physics.

The live visit will take place from inside the cavern, letting people see ATLAS itself.  The visit will be hosted by Dr. Steven Goldfarb, ATLAS physicist and science communicator.

The CERN Tour will take place at LAcon V on Friday at 9:00 am.  Check the convention’s Program Schedule for the room.
