Update on LAcon V
It’s almost a year until LAcon V, but I’d like to give you an update on some of what we are planning for your entertainment.
Our committee is working very hard to provide you with some experiences that will delight and amaze you. We are planning all sorts of unique adventures, both during the convention itself and in and around Anaheim. You are invited to explore the area before or after the con to enjoy what the city has to offer. Also, we are attempting to obtain discounts for our attendees at various sites. We will inform you of any special happenings that have been arranged to allow you to participate in them as it gets closer to the actual dates. LAcon V is going to bring you presentations and spectacles that will astonish and astound you. You will be excited to see what is around the next corner.
Events
While it’s hard to lock down exactly what we’ll present to you during our Worldcon, we can give you information on what we’re working on.
Our Hugo Awards ceremony will be held in the Anaheim Arena of the Convention Center North and our Toastmaster, Ursula Vernon, will be your host. The presenters will all have connections to the Hugos and Hugo categories, including some unusual guests.
To give you a special treat, we are working with one of the top film & television composers to present a live concert of his music. If you enjoy being mystified, we will have magicians from the world famous Magic Castle wandering through our Lounge, performing their illusions to delight those of you interested. Seeing magic, up-close and personal, makes it even more perplexing and intriguing.
Want to design your own dragon? Guest of Honor Tim Kirk will lead a class where anyone can Learn To Draw A Dragon. Since Tim is noted for his Tolkien calendar artwork, this promises to be a fanciful event as you produce a sketch when Tim shows you how, with simple shapes, you’ll bring your vision to life.
In addition, in the Pacific Ballroom in the Hilton, a series of performances, from one-person shows to full plays, will be presented on our dedicated stage. And we hope to arrange a “virtual tour” of a major international science center that is not open to the general public.
These are only a few of the events we are planning for LAcon V. Join us for a spectacular adventure.
Programming
The Programming team is working hard to put together a great schedule for the convention. Covering over a dozen different content areas, including literature, art & makers, media, music & filk fandom, anime & manga, STEM, costuming & cosplay, gaming, and comics & graphic novels, we are planning panels, workshops, demonstrations, and much more.
There will be separate spaces for children’s programming, board gaming, teen programming, and even an academic program track. We are also working hard with our Virtual Division to provide a robust virtual program and are looking for volunteers to help us shape both in-person and virtual items.
We would welcome you as a program volunteer, visit Program Overview for more information.
Virtual Programs
We are working hard with programming, WSFS, and events to make sure attendees from all over the world can enjoy as much of our convention as possible. While we are still in the planning stages, we would appreciate help from those of you who have expertise in this area. Please keep an eye on our LAcon V website for more information about the virtual experience we intend to provide for all our convention attendees.
Facilities
As we are preparing for LAcon V, we would like to remind you about the proximity of our two hotels to the Anaheim Convention Center North function spaces.
The side door of the Anaheim Hilton Hotel is less than a 5 minute walk for most, while the Anaheim Marriott is slightly farther but still is only about a 5 minute walk for most people. The walking space is mostly level ground, making it easily accessible, but also allows you to stroll at your own pace, or even stop for a quick meal at either the food court located in the rear of the Hilton or at the food trucks that will be parked between the Marriott and the Hilton.
WSFS
The WSFS Division is currently working to ensure that we are prepared to present all items required in the administration of the Hugo Awards and business meeting. Soon we will be requesting designs for the Hugo Award rocket base as well as opening the nominations for the Hugos in January 2026. Watch for announcements of our activities in future newsletters and on the LAcon V website.
Hospitality
We want to ensure you have a place to relax and recharge during the con. You can do so in our Con Suite, where you can sit and chill while enjoying some snacks and drinks (non-alcoholic, of course) while meeting up with old friends or making new ones. The hours for our Con Suite are scheduled to be from 8 AM to 1 AM, so you can drop by whenever it’s convenient for you to embark on a snack break or just wind down from a busy day.
Like to party? Then come to the Hilton in the evenings. There will be a number of parties open to all attendees. Thrown by a variety of groups, you can find out about local and regional conventions and even some future Worldcons. You will even find parties commemorating authors and their novels and other publications as well as some that are thrown by people who just like to celebrate any occasion to have a good time. Keep adventuring and party on!
Promotions and Marketing
We are always reaching out to fans, trying to keep you aware of what is being planned for LAcon V and getting your suggestions for what you would like to see.
In the next few weeks and months, we will have fan tables at many upcoming conventions including Orycon, Capclave, Windycon, Philcon, Loscon, Gallifrey One, and Can*Con. Of course, we are constantly looking to add more appearances to the list.
If you have suggestions of conventions where we could have fan tables, please contact our Promotions Team.
Convention Support
A convention doesn’t run itself and ours is no exception. There are many people working diligently behind the scenes to prepare for this amazing event. Their role is pivotal in providing the best con experience for all our attendees. We are ensuring that all the little things as well as the big ones are done to guarantee everything runs smoothly. But we also need your help in all areas of service.
That’s why we are encouraging you to volunteer your time and skills to make LAconV as good as it can be.
Come Volunteer for LAcon V
With all the programming and events that we are planning for LAcon V, we are desperately seeking help to ensure that these will come to fruition. We really want to invite you to be a part of this creation, experiencing the convention from the ground up, an adventure that will give you an understanding of the various skills and knowledge that will be useful in your everyday life. The skills you already have will be utilized to the extent you desire and, if you are interested in learning new expertise, we can provide the appropriate mentoring necessary to help you develop this competency. Please check out the listing of jobs that are available; the openings that are listed on our website. Other openings become available frequently, so please keep checking, even if you’ve looked at this before. You might find a new one that is just right for you.
If you would like to work in a specific area, you can apply directly or just volunteer for general work and indicate what you would like to do. You can list any work, either in fandom or the mundane world, that you think may be pertinent, but don’t let your lack of experience stop you. We can share what expertise we have and let you obtain your own as you work with us. We enjoy sharing experiences and hope you would like to do so as well. Remember, we appreciate any time you can give. Join us, because … adventure awaits!
