Hugo Awards Tonight with Live Coverage
The Hugo Awards® are the leading award for excellence in the field of science fiction and fantasy. First presented in 1953, they have been awarded every year since 1955 by the members of the World Science Fiction Society (Worldcon members) at Worldcon. Also part of the ceremony is the presentation of the Lodestar Award for Best Young Adult Book and the Astounding Award for Best New Author.
This year’s Hugo Awards ceremony will be held tonight! Join us on Sunday at 8:00pm Pacific on the stage at the Anaheim Convention Center’s Arena. The Hugo Awards will be livestreamed online (including on the convention’s YouTube page).
Additionally, this evening the LAcon V website will be live blogging the winners of the Hugo, Lodestar and Astounding Awards as each award is presented, so even if you cannot attend or participate, winner announcements will happen in real time. Join us at lacon.org/2026hugos for all the fun!

Worldcon Down Under
Although the winner of the Site Selection for 2028 has not yet been announced, it is almost certainly Brisbane, as the other declared candidate (Nuremberg, Germany) withdrew. If they follow tradition, Brisbane in 2028 will convert to a seated bid and announce its con committee and its first guests of honor. We’ll have that information in our next issue.
Fuzzy interviewed Jo Van, Bid Co-Chair and Mel Davis, Bid Treasurer
They said that they arranged for a solar eclipse the week before the convention. The full totality will be visible in most of Australia and New Zealand. While Australia may seem costly, they estimate that most American fans would be able to afford two weeks in Australia,including the 13.5 hour airfare from the Los Angeles area, by saving just $40 a week.
The last Worldcon in Australia was Aussiecon 4 (2010) in Melbourne . The 2028 Worldcon (assuming they win) will be in Brisbane, which is warmer during the Australian winter (which takes place when it is summer in the U.S. and Europe). The weather will be 50 – 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
Brisbane is a very walkable city. It has invested in its infrastructure for the Olympics and transportation is cheap. The city is known for its beaches, one is right next to the convention center. Fans will be able to walk across the river to visit Star Casino which has spectacular views from its terrace a kilometer in the air. They can also visit a nearby kola sanctuary with kangaroos, wombats and other animals unique to Australia. Small children can visit Bluey World.
One of the convention’s hotels is connected to the convention center and two more are wrapped around it. There are also nearby Bed and Breakfasts. The city is more affordable than most of Australia’s cities and can serve as a base for nearby travel.
Fuzzy knows that people in Australia do not walk upside down so stop asking about it.

The Judges for this year’s Art Show are Meghan Lancaster, David Stein, Joe Siclari, Edie Siclari and Elizabeth Klein-Lebbink. The image above right is the Art Show award presented at this year’s Worldcon.
Yes, You Can Blink (Doctor Who Was Wrong)
A blinkie is a small pin or a larger item that can hang from your badge. Fans can solder connections on the back to make the lights blink. How? Learn how to do it in ACC North in 263B on the far right side for the Build a Blinkie workshop, Sunday 10:00am to 6:00pm; Monday 10:00am to 4:00pm. Now you may think, “Oh, those are cool, but I couldn’t do one!” But, can you read? Can you follow directions? If so you can build a blinkie. If you do any sort of craft at all: needle work, crochet, knitting, baking, YOU can build a blinkie!
Pick out a kit, sit down at a station, remember hot things are hot, and start reading your directions. There are people in the room who are very helpful. Once you’re done, you’ll have a fabulous pin, or other item, and feel more confident!
Bonus, they can also double as a tiny flash light when you’re leaving the con late at night.
Brissa Urb wrote, “I would love to contribute a shout out to the members of the 2D kits! On Friday I purchased a small kit and spent time in-between panels getting professional help making a little blinker. The members of their team made learning fun and we all shared stories and laughter. It really made my first time alone at the con unforgettable!! And I met new friends working on projects themselves! I want to help more people find that experience in ACC north 264. You do need to purchase a kit, but they are very inexpensive for the kind of 1:1 support they were giving everyone. I learned a new skill 🙂 I’ve been so proud of my work and bragging to everyone. Thanks 2d kits!!”
Restaurant Reviews
Sabrosada: Chain Mexican Restaurant – Flash Sheridan wrote, “Pretty good downmarket chain Mexican restaurant near the north end of the Convention Center, past the 7-11. Eat on the outdoor patio next to the pizza place; the restaurant’s inside is small and too hot.”
Carl Jr.: Burger Chain – This Western restaurant was merged with the Hardee’s chain in 1997 and the two share a menu and the star symbol. They serve a decent fast food burger. I’d say it was expensive for fast food, but considering the prices of everything else around here, it was quite reasonable. Make a left from the Hilton and then a Right on S. Harbor Blvd. I passed a Denny’s on the other side of S. Harbor and a Taco Bell was across from Carl Jr.’s.

Volunteers Desk Has Moved
The end days of Worldcons need more volunteers to help finish everything and pack it away. Please help! The volunteers’ desk has been moved to ACC North in front of 262C, near the Katella Terrace.Visit there to help the convention. Even a couple of hours can make a big difference.
