LAcon V: The 84th World Science Fiction Convention has announced that the annual business meeting of the World Science Fiction Society, which takes place during each Worldcon, will be held online in 2026.
As part of the announcement of a virtual meeting, members of the society — which includes all those with memberships in the 2026 Worldcon LAcon V — have been encouraged to fill out a survey which will be used to help schedule the online business meeting sessions; the survey can be found by clicking here.
“The business meeting is one of the most important aspects of a Worldcon. This is where debates take place over the future of fandom, where we hear competing visions of what the convention is and who it is for. It is where issues of Hugo Award governance are hashed out, and where issues of equity are raised,” LAcon V chair Joyce Lloyd said. “Holding this meeting online is important because it means voices who might not otherwise be heard can have their say. We’ve been telling people that Adventure Awaits them at LAcon V, and we don’t want anyone to miss the adventure.”
This will be the second time that the business meeting is held online, following the groundbreaking decision by the 2025 Seattle Worldcon to do so. Much as took place in 2025, most of the sessions of the 2026 WSFS Business Meeting will be held online using a virtual platform. The Site Selection Business Meeting, where the results of the 2028 site selection will be announced, will still be held in person during the general convention dates in LA.
“A virtual Business Meeting means participation in the meeting isn’t limited to those with the physical and economic ability to travel, and it also allows committed members of the society who are busy working on the convention – as staff, volunteers, program participants, and dealers – to have a say.” WSFS business meeting chairperson Jesi Lipp said. “The Seattle virtual Business Meeting had more than 40 members who were able to attend for the first time. We are excited to build on that success.”
